Once upon a time, two mischievous pups, named Sparky and Grumpy, were up to no good. They had done all the usual things pups do, like come in the house with muddy paws, carry shoes away and hide them, rip newspapers all to bits, and chase cats. But they were wanting to do something more exciting and adventurous. Sparky said, “let’s explore the forest. It should not take us more than an hour to get there.”
“An hour?” said Grumpy, that would be way too far. And what will we do when we get there?”
“Don’t be grumpy,” said Sparky, “I thought you were looking for excitement!”
Sparky started running and Grumpy had to follow. They made it to the forest in less than an hour. Once there, they ran along a path and came to a creek. “Let’s do some exploring along the creek,” said Sparky.
Soon they met up with a raccoon who seemed to be very upset about something. The raccoon ran up to them and said, “please help me. I have lost my baby raccoons. They vanished while I was busy cleaning the den.”
“Yes,” said Sparky, “we will help you find them.”
Grumpy nudged Sparky and said, “are you out of your mind, we came here to have fun, not look for baby raccoons!”
“It shouldn’t take long,” said Sparky. “Let’s go.”
It took a long time, but they finally found them. The baby raccoons were playing house in a hollow tree stump. And they did not even know that they were lost. Mother raccoon thanked them and the pups were on their way.
As they ran along the creek, they came across a log. “Let’s jump on the log and float down the river,” suggested Sparky. Grumpy thought that should be fun to do.
They were having fun, but soon they came across a beaver dam. A beaver called out to them, “please come over and help me. I want to move a big log over to my dam but I can’t do it alone.”
“Not again,” said Grumpy. “We can’t waste our time helping everybody.”
“It wouldn’t be nice not to help,” said Sparky. “There will be enough time left to do more exciting things.
”
It took a lot of paddling and pushing but they finally got the big log moved over to the dam. The beaver was very grateful and said, “come inside my lodge and have a rest.” But Sparky and Grumpy said, “thanks, but we have no time to rest, we are looking for adventure. And the day will soon be over.”
They continued down the path along the creek and came across a rabbit who seemed to be busy digging a hole in the ground. Sparky asked, “what are you doing, rabbit?” The rabbit said, “I am trying to build a burrow. Could you please help me?”
Sparky said, “sure thing.”
Grumpy couldn’t believe it. Wasting time helping out again. There won’t be any time in the day left to do something exciting. But he knew there would be no way of changing Sparky’s mind. They took turns digging a hole in the ground. After a few hours the rabbit’s home was done. Rabbit was really happy about it and thanked Sparky and Grumpy for all the help.
That was hard work and the pups were sweating. Time to splash around a bit in the creek to cool off.
“Where has the day gone,” said Sparky. “It is time we headed home.”
On the way home Grumpy complained a lot about not having had any fun. They had gone out to do something adventurous, but all they did was help a raccoon find her kittens, help a beaver build a dam, and help a rabbit dig a burrow. What a complete waste of a day, thought Grumpy.
On the way home they met their friend, Rover, who wanted to know where they had been. Grumpy told Rover all about their boring day, how they had helped a raccoon find her babies, then helped a beaver build a dam, helped a rabbit dig a hole, went for a log ride, and splashed around in the creek.
“That was a really great adventure,” said Rover. “You did so many exciting things. What a fun day you had! All I did was sleep all day and watch cars go by. I wish I could have been with you.”
Rover’s remarks got Grumpy really thinking. After all, he did feel good about helping his friends and the log ride and splash in the water were a lot of fun. Grumpy suddenly realized that they did have an exciting and adventurous day after all.
That evening when it was time for them to go to sleep, Sparky was kept awake by Grumpy who couldn’t stop talking about all the excitement and adventure they experienced on that day. Of course, Sparky had thought it was an exciting day all along.
